Remember when this same cult was all about shaming Donald Trump for calling elections "rigged"?

Saying he was undermining the democratic process?

I can't believe it.

It's mainly a bunch of White celebrities like Debra Messing.

I'm back in Atlanta for Thanksgiving.

Grabbing a second to blog.

Hadn't been planning on blogging today.

But then my oldest sister said she couldn't believe this nonsense and why wasn't I blogging about it?

Then everyone chimed in.

My father with, "It's an election.  Someone wins.  Someone loses.  Get over it."

My mother saying she's lived through elections when her side lost and she moved on.

(And my mother did vote for Hillary.  My dad voted for Jill Stein.  My brother voted for Jill and two of my sisters did. One sister voted for Hillary.  Of the other adult relatives present -- 15 -- 13 voted for Hillary.  1 voted for Jill.  1 did not vote.)

They really are coming off like a bunch of cry babies, these celebrities like Debra Messing.

The election is over.

Let it go.

They think they can turn back time or something.

Cher?  She's being an adult and a grown up.  As soon as I typed the last paragraph, I thought of "If I Could Turn Back Time" and checked Cher's Twitter.  She was deep for Hillary.  She's got a life.  She's not trying to make every day election day.  In fact let me note one Tweet that's particularly important.

Meanwhile Debra Messing is just a loon.

Leading a crowd of loons.

I'm thankful for my family.

I'm thankful I have a job that lets me pay for my oldest child's college (and will let me pay for the next two).

I'm thankful my oldest is getting ready for college.

I'm thankful my children are healthy.

I'm thankful my family also includes my wealth of friends.  I am very blessed with a family of friends.

I'm thankful that I made it so far.

There were dark days -- I don't go into my awful marriage here -- but God, my family and my friends never abandoned me.

Hope you are having a great Thanksgiving.

"Iraq snapshot" (THE COMMON ILLS):
Wednesday, November 23, 2016.  Chaos and violence continue, the Mosul slog continues, Hannah Allem continues her lifelong streak of being (at best) useless or (more often) harmful, and much more.

'Are you too hard on Hannah Allem?'

Some drive-by e-mails ask that.  They then explain that she's with MCCLATCHY NEWSPAPERS and, remember, in the lead up to the war, they were the only ones who told the truth about Iraq.

It's the press' job to question.

But, more to the point, MCCLATCHY didn't question a damn thing.

KNIGHT RIDDER did.

Jonathan Landay and Warren Stroble -- who get the credit from their peers (Margaret Talev gets ignored) -- worked for KNIGHT RIDDER.

MCCLATCHY NEWSPAPERS was around at the time.  It had been for over a century (it's 41 years shy of celebrating it's 200th year anniversary).

It just didn't feel the need to do the job of questioning government propaganda.

It was KNIGHT RIDDER that did.

In the summer of 2006, KNIGHT RIDDER was purchased and taken over by MCCLATCHY.

Like MCCLATCHY, Hannah didn't do s**t.

Now she wasn't as bad as Roy Gutman.

Who could be?

Let's go to Mike's June 17, 2010 post:

Thursday. Okay, tonight's most pressing question: When using "fat asses," which is the bad word?

Reading Ava and C.I.'s "Media: Let's Kill Helen!" and listening to the program, I e-mailed Roy Gutman to let him know that I didn't find it entertaining that he didn't defend Helen Thomas and that he laughed when Yochi insisted the press was not responsible for the Iraq War.

I didn't expect him to write me back (and I won't quote from his e-mail without his permission) but he did and what a whiney.

My use of "fat" or "asses" was objectionable. I'm still confused as to which.

I'm also amazed that a seasoned reporter has never heard "fat" and/or "asses" before me. You sort of get the impression that Roy Gutman's spent the last decades covering socials and tea rooms.

Second, don't lie to me. Roy tried to say he didn't laugh.

I don't think they realize how audible stuff is.

[. . .]

So the point is, Roy Gutman, you did laugh. It's right there on the broadcast. Pop some ear phones into your Fat ears or your Ass ears and listen. You will hear the laughter. I say it's Roy because it's a man -- eliminating Diane -- it's not Yochi who is blathering away and the third man is Arab with a distinctive voice and that laugh isn't his pitch. It's Roy. (And I'd think that even if Diane Rehm's people hadn't identified the laughter as Roy's.)

So I have no idea why he wants to pretend otherwise.

Though it did occur to me that he might have laughed and forgotten.

I'll grant him that. And that's about all I'll do. But he needs to listen to the broadcast before he whines again. And he needs to watch what he does on a microphone in the future.

And just to finish this out, let's go to Mike's June 18, 2010 post:

Roy Gutman e-mailed to tell me "limp dicked" was the term he found objectionable. :D

I'd honestly forgotten that was in the e-mail. (I mailed it Monday. I didn't see his response until Thursday. In his response, he did not include mine below so I was thinking, "What did I say? Fat ass?") Good for me for using "limp dicked."

I should have done variations including Limp Bizkit. :D

I love "limp dicked." :D But I grew up playing sports. And I'm guessing (slowly) that Roy wasn't on the football team or basketball team or baseball team. I hear tell he played a mean game of jacks. No one could beat at two-sies! :D

So, as a jack player (considered more hobby than sport and requiring no locker room), Roy Gutman was not exposed to frank locker room talk.

As such, he had virgin ears and had never heard "limp dicked" until I used it in my e-mail. He had to run out into the streets and ask people. An 80-year-old woman slapped him across the face and called him "young feller!" :D But he finally found out what it meant and he was shocked.

Roy, my apologies. And congratulations on two-sies.

That's a little more representative of MCCLATCHY.

Helen Thomas is wrongly attacked and they find that sort of thing humorous.

She loses the seat she's held for decades in the White House press briefing.

She's dropped by her employer.

And they think it's funny.

I don't get, to this day, how people could apply a standard like that to Helen and yet a Hannah Allem can Tweet the crap she does and still have a job.  Or pass around the e-mails she does.

Hannah's the dirty joke that got old about 20 years ago but still lingers.

Is Hannah really going to play dumb about all the times Barack exploded at the press in closed door meetings?

Forget what I know privately, reporters have talked about it publicly.

For Ann Compton speaking on C-SPAN go this POLITICO's 2014 article -- which has the video.

Ben Wolfgang (WASHINGTON TIMES) covered Compton's statements:

“I have seen in the last year Barack Obama really angry twice. Both were off-the-record times. One, profanity-laced where he thought the press was making too much of scandals that he did not think were scandals. Another where he took us to task for not understanding the limits he has with foreign policy and the way he’s dealing with the Middle East and Iraq, and Afghanistan,” she said. “And I don’t find him apologetic. But I find him willing to stand up to the press and look them in the eye, even though it was off the record and just give us hell.”

While I don't expect Jon Snow to know about it -- the 69-year-old resides in England -- I do expect Hannah Allem to know about it.

Of course, she's just a liar.

Menacing calls!  Online mean things said!!!!

Nothing so bad has ever, ever happened!!!!

"Findings suggest the enriched Uranium exposure is either a primary cause or related to the cause of the congenital anomaly and cancer increases," says a recent scientific report on the incidence of birth defects in Fallujah [Dr Samira Alani]

 That's from Al Jazeera.

We're looking at the effects of the weapons the US used on Iraq.

We're looking at birth defects.

Hannah never gave a damn about Iraq.

She never wrote about the birth defects, never gave a damn about these innocent children.

But some eatery gets phone calls and online negative comments and it's time to scream, "Oh, the humanity!"?

Steven's even worse.

We won't open up that can of worms, I'm pretty much done with that paper, but we will note it takes a hell of a lot of nerve and gall for him to pretend to be horrified by 'fake news.'

His paper offered nothing but fake news.

They sold the Iraq War on lies.

And it's not just the effects of this war that Hannah and THE TIMES ignore.  It's all the attacks on civilians.  Falluja?  Nouri al-Maliki started bombing it daily in January 2014.  Where was the press?  Or how about we drop back to August 14, 2015 to note the photos from new prime minister Hayder al-Abadi's  August 13th bombing of a maternity hospital in Falluja?

  • Hannah, THE TIMES and all the rest are the last who should lecture about fake news because if it weren't for their ability to fabricate fake news, (a) they'd be out of business and (b) the people of the world would be a lot less oppressed.

As Cass Elliot, Denny Doherty, John and Michelle Phillips (the Mamas and the Papas) sing in "Too Late" (first appears on THE PAPAS & THE MAMAS):

Get on your pony and ride
No one to catch up to you

No one to catch up to you
    If you try.
No one to catch up to you,
If you try -- 'cause I've tried.

'Cause when the mind that once was open shuts
And you knock on the door, nobody answers anymore
When the love and trust has turned to dust
When the mind that once was open shuts

Hannah and her ilk work overtime to pretend the Iraq War ended.

    It never did.

Even the right wing Center for a New American Century can tell the truth (Michele Flournoy created it and it was Barack's go-to throughout his presidency).  At WAR ON THE ROCKS, they offer:

The difficulties of applying the U.S. military’s phasing construct to the realities of conflict are rarely more evident than when examining the American experience in Iraq. Though U.S. involvement in Iraq has traditionally been divided into two distinct periods of conflict, the 1990–1991 Gulf War and the 2003–2011 Iraq War, the reality is that the U.S. military has been nearly continuously engaged in Iraq for the past 26 years. The United States has conducted special operations raids into, launched cruise missiles at, imposed no-fly zones over, and outright invaded Iraq. The United States also provided humanitarian aid, financially supported local actors, and even governed the country. The six-phase planning construct does a poor job of accurately representing the range of activities over a quarter-century of U.S. foreign policy and military strategy in Iraq.

Right now, in Canada, some of the people and some of the press are starting to sound off about the Canadian troops in Iraq and how this is, indeed, war.

THE TORONTO STAR, for example, can cover it, the CBC can cover it . . .

But here in the US, the pretense continues.

My name is Penny Evans and I've just gone twenty-one
A young widow in the war that's being fought in Vietnam
And I have two infant daughters, I thank God I have no sons

-- Melanie's version of "The Ballad of Penny Evans" used as an intro to her composition "Peace Will Come (According to Plan)"  -- "Peace Will Come (According to Plan)" first appears on her LEFTOVER WINE album.

So many truths can't be told in a world where Hannah Allem represents the press.

“This invidious act is another dark spot in the history records,” Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Deputy Prime Minister, Qubad Talabani, said on Wednesday (November 23), calling for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.
Kurdistan Parliament Speaker Yousif Mohammed expressed concern over the murder of Ismail, saying it is an extension of a “series of terror and terrorizing thoughts” against Islamic preachers, journalists, writers, members of Peshmerga and activists in the region’s capital of Erbil.
The first Secretary-General of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), Kosrat Rasul, said the act to kill the preacher is a dark spot in the experience of the Kurdistan Region.

“Murdering preachers at this time when there are attempts to make peace is invidious,” Rasul said. “The related institutions must find the perpetrators soon and bring them to justice.”

That mother lost her home.  Now she puts her children in a hold to protect them from the bombs and sleeps next to it to protect them from other things.

    Bombs?

This morning, the US Defense Dept announced:

    Strikes in Iraq
Attack, bomber, fighter and remotely piloted aircraft conducted 11 strikes in Iraq, coordinated with and in support of Iraq’s government:

-- Near Mosul, four strikes engaged three ISIL tactical units; destroyed six ISIL-held buildings, a mortar system, a vehicle, a weapons cache, a supply cache and an artillery system; and damaged five supply routes and a bridge.

-- Near Rawah, a strike engaged an ISIL tactical unit and destroyed a vehicle, a mortar system and a weapons cache.

-- Near Tal Afar, a strike destroyed inoperable coalition equipment.

Task force officials define a strike as one or more kinetic events that occur in roughly the same geographic location to produce a single, sometimes cumulative, effect. Therefore, officials explained, a single aircraft delivering a single weapon against a lone ISIL vehicle is one strike, but so is multiple aircraft delivering dozens of weapons against buildings, vehicles and weapon systems in a compound, for example, having the cumulative effect of making those targets harder or impossible for ISIL to use. Accordingly, officials said, they do not report the number or type of aircraft employed in a strike, the number of munitions dropped in each strike, or the number of individual munition impact points against a target.

    Why's Hannah reTweeting that nonsense?

Because she's cheap, tacky and tawdry.

Her entire life in 2016 was about electing Hillary (even her child suffered).

She didn't get her way so now she's going to object to Iraq War veteran Tulsi.

    Who is she linking to?

    Let's let RIGHT WEB explain:

Diehl’s stint as the Post’s deputy editorial page editor has coincided with what many observers consider to be a decidedly hawkish and conservative turn in the page’s editorial stances.[4] Diehl’s own writings—he publishes a regular column for the Post on foreign affairs—typically lean to the militarist right, leading one observer to characterize him as “the knee-jerk hawk at the Washington Post.”[5] Among his common targets are leftist leaders in Latin America and the Middle East.[6]
The strategic disaster of the Iraq War did not change Diehl’s attitude toward U.S. intervention abroad. In a column marking the tenth anniversary of the war, Diehl lamented that U.S. policymakers had learned the “wrong lessons” from Iraq and had become unnecessarily timid about intervening in Syria. “In the absence of U.S. intervention,” he claimed, “Syria is looking like it could produce a much worse humanitarian disaster and a far more serious strategic reverse for the United States” than Iraq. “The tragedy of the post-Iraq logic embraced by President Obama is that it has ruled out not just George W. Bush-style invasions but also the more modest intervention used by the Clinton administration to prevent humanitarian catastrophes and protect U.S. interests in the 1990s.”[7]

Diehl also takes a hardline view of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, placing the blame for the stalled peace process solely on the Palestinians—or President Obama—and never Israel.

Why would Hannah be reTweeting such a person?

Because (a) she doesn't care about Iraq and (b) she loathes Tulsi (who supported Senator Bernie Sanders in the Democratic Party primaries and not War Hawk Hillary Clinton).

    Robert Parry (CONSORTIUM NEWS) notes:

Two weeks after Donald Trump’s shocking upset of Hillary Clinton, the imperious and imperial neoconservatives and their liberal-interventionist understudies may finally be losing their tight grip on U.S. foreign policy.
The latest sign was Trump’s invitation for a meeting with Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii, on Monday. The mainstream media commentary has almost completely missed the potential significance of this start-of-the-work-week meeting by suggesting that Trump is attracted to Gabbard’s tough words on “radical Islamic terrorism.”
Far more important is that Gabbard, a 35-year-old Iraq War veteran, endorsed Sen. Bernie Sanders in the Democratic primaries because of his opposition to neocon/liberal-hawk military adventures. She starred in one of the strongest political ads of the campaign, a message to Hawaiians, called “The Cost of War.”
“Bernie Sanders voted against the Iraq War,” Gabbard says. “He understands the cost of war, that that cost is continued when our veterans come home. Bernie Sanders will defend our country and take the trillions of dollars that are spent on these interventionist, regime change, unnecessary wars and invest it here at home.”

In the ad, Gabbard threw down the gauntlet to the neocons and their liberal-hawk sidekicks, by accusing them of wasting trillions of dollars “on these interventionist, regime change, unnecessary wars.” Her comments mesh closely with Trump’s own perspective.

Hannah would rather lay with the neocons than stand with the people.  Supposedly, Donald Trump will instead go with Nikki Haley.  Hannah must be so proud of herself.

    The schillaries (Ezra and others)

David V. Johnson has an article at THE BAFFLER:

Third, the Shillaries. The host of journalists, commentators, pundits, and celebrities who took it upon themselves day in and day out to explain, scrub, polish, promote, praise, defend, and sell Hillary as the best thing that could ever happen to our blessed country, because she had an endemic inability to do what politicians are supposed to do: sell themselves to the public. Presidential candidates, especially those with Clinton’s record-breaking funding base, can pay consultants to promote their ideas and promise. We don’t need journalists to volunteer to do it for them, and we sure as hell don’t need journalists who are taking on double-duty as PR flacks to further their own careers in the liberal punditocracy’s cursus honorum from lowly scribe to editor-writer at a highbrow magazine or earnest millennial channel to White House press secretary—or the C-suite at a Silicon Valley unicorn. RIP, my Shillaries.
When it comes to explaining Hillary to the voters, no one performed greater yeoman’s work than our country’s lead explainer, Vox.com “head vegetable chef” Ezra Klein. Back in July—as Hillary was preparing for the Democratic National Convention—Klein published a “Vox Media Storytelling Studio” un-profile (he denied his profile was a profile) cooked with the aid of thirty-one sous chefs (go ahead and scroll down to the credits). The piece launched from a paradoxical observation ne’er seen in the history of politics. Consider “the Gap”:
Why is the Hillary Clinton described to me by her staff, her colleagues, and even her foes so different from the one I see on the campaign trail?
I have come to call it “the Gap.” There is the Hillary Clinton I watch on the nightly news and that I read described in the press. She is careful, calculated, cautious. Her speeches can sound like executive summaries from a committee report, the product of too many authors, too many voices, and too much fear of offense.
And then there is the Hillary Clinton described to me by people who have worked with her, people I admire, people who understand Washington in ways I never will. Their Hillary Clinton is spoken of in superlatives: brilliant, funny, thoughtful, effective. She inspires a rare loyalty in ex-staff, and an unusual protectiveness even among former foes.
It is truly shocking to hear that people who interact with a politician on a day-to-day basis—especially those who work for her or depend on good relations with her—might have some positive and humanizing things to say about her. But putting that bombshell aside, why should we, the voters, care about a candidate’s affability and humor away from the podium? Would supporters of George W. Bush be dissuaded if they found out that, actually, people who are close to him say he’s not so much fun to grab a beer with? We vote a politician into office for doing what politicians do, which is, among other things, selling us on themselves and their ideas. Hillary might be wonderful in a one-on-one chat, but most of us will, unfortunately, never share Ezra’s good fortune in savoring that truth either first-hand or under the tutelage of Hillary campaign insiders.

I would have passed that onto Trina because she's always taking down Ezzie Klein.

But I see she's already posted tonight ("No laughs left in the joke that is ObamaCare").

But, yes, I always agree with her.

    Ezra Klein is ridiculous.

    He's a fool.

    And a hack.

And C.I. warned us over ten years ago that we were just chopping off the head of Cokie Roberts for new media whores to spout in her place.

    "Iraq snapshot" (THE COMMON ILLS):
Tuesday, November 22, 2016.  Chaos and violence continue, the Mosul operation continues to continue, War Crimes continue, and more.

As we noted yesterday, Iraq's not a news maker currently.  Everyone has something else to cover.  Even at a State Dept press briefing.

For example, yesterday Matt Lee (ASSOCIATED PRESS) wasted everyone's time again by asking spokesperson John Kirby questions about what the incoming administration will do and John again informed him he cannot answer those questions.

But it got Matt the chance to waste time, to get in one of those barbs that let people think he's independent.

What if WikiLeaks gets a hold of the Matt Lee and Victoria Nuland e-mails?

As someone who saw some of them over a year ago, I know Matt would lose a lot of credibility.  Orchestrating with Nuland what to ask, sharing how Benghazi wasn't a real issue, blah blah blah.

Maybe instead of trying to show boat in press briefings, he should do the job the AP is paying him to do?

While the press flounders, US Vice President Joe Biden was noting Iraq.  Yesterday, the White House issued the following:

    For Immediate Release
    November 21, 2016

Readout of Vice President Biden’s Call with Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi of Iraq

The Vice President spoke today with Iraq's Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi to discuss the campaign to liberate Mosul and the broader campaign to defeat ISIL in Iraq. The Vice President commended Iraqi Security Forces for their battlefield successes against ISIL and pledged continued U.S. support pursuant to our Strategic Framework Agreement.  He also extended condolences to the families of those killed in the battle to liberate Mosul and wished a speedy recovery to the wounded. He also commended the close ongoing cooperation between the Iraqi Security Forces and Kurdish Peshmerga. The Vice President reaffirmed U.S. respect for Iraq's territorial integrity and sovereignty. He also underscored the importance to U.S. interests of building on the successful U.S.-Iraq partnership in the years ahead to protect strategic gains and to ensure Iraq's lasting stability.

    Yes, Mosul.

    The slog that never ends.

It's now 36 days since the operation began.

    And still it continues.

    As do the War Crimes.

As we noted yesterday, Hayder al-Abadi went on state media Monday morning to denounce the press and human rights organizations for telling the truth.

He doesn't want to stop the War Crimes.

He just wants to stop the coverage of the War Crimes.

Some very kind and strong people who care about Iraq have had faith that Hayder would change things.  I have had exchanges with them where I disagreed.

I hope now they're beginning to grasp that (a) Hayder's no different from Nouri al-Maliki and (b) when vengeful people are put in a position with no checks or balances, they only become worse.

    James Cogan (WSWS) reports:

The US-directed offensive to recapture the northern Iraqi city of Mosul and surrounding towns and villages from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has entered its fifth week.
The assault involves an increasingly antagonistic collection of armed forces, including some 30,000 Iraqi Army troops, 15,000 peshmerga soldiers of the Kurdish Regional Government (KRG), thousands of anti-ISIS Sunni Arab and Christian fighters, Turkish Army-backed Turkomen militias, and as many as 20,000 to 30,000 Shiite militia members loyal to the fundamentalist political parties that dominate the US-backed government in Baghdad.
The Shiite militias, known as the Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF), are seeking to capture the predominantly ethnic Turkomen city of Tal Afar, 60 kilometres to the west of Mosul, near the border with Syria, and cut off escape routes for ISIS forces to its Syrian capital of Raqqa. The PMF captured Tal Afar airport on November 16. In the past 24 hours, it has claimed that its fighters are on the verge of fully surrounding the city.
The Turkish government, which proclaims itself the defender of Turkomen Iraqis, has repeated its threats to invade Iraq and attack the largely Arab Shiite militias if they “cause terror” in Tal Afar. In operations against ISIS in the western Iraqi cities of Fallujah and Ramadi, the PMF were accused of sectarian killings and abuses against Sunni civilians. To try to placate Turkey, Iraqi Army units have been dispatched to ostensibly lead any assault on Tal Afar.
In Mosul, Iraqi government special forces claim they are slowly “clearing” ISIS fighters from the eastern suburbs, in the face of fierce resistance, and are eight kilometres from the city centre. Northern Mosul is sealed off by Kurdish pershmerga. To the south, the Iraqi Army has advanced to within 20 kilometres. The vast bulk of the city, however, is still firmly under ISIS control.
The US military has admitted that hundreds of American personnel are on the ground and involved in the combat. British and Australian troops are also reported to be fighting alongside Iraqi units.

US Army spokesperson Colonel John Dorrian told journalists last week that US Green Berets and other special forces personnel were “in the thick of a very tough battle.” Dorrian stated: “There’s no question that US advisors are in harms’ way... It’s not our role to take terrain or close with the enemy, but as the Iraqis move, if they need us, we’ll go where they need us.”

    US troops are in combat.

    That's the reality.

It's the reality the Hannah Allems have chosen to ignore until after Donald Trump is sworn in.

Then those useless 'reporters' will suddenly discover US troops are still in combat in Iraq.

    And they will be outraged.

    Outraged.

Jason Ditz (ANTIWAR.COM) observes, "Though reports out of Mosul suggest the offensive there is moving at a snail’s pace, Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari talked up the continued 'progress,' claiming the battle is going better than the government had expected."

    The United Nations notes:

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that as of Sunday, the United Nations has registered more than 68,500 people as displaced by the military operations to retake the Iraqi city of Mosul, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters here Monday.
This is a jump from nearly 60,000 people just three days earlier, Dujarric said at a daily news briefing here.

"A health assessment carried out in Zelikan Camp, northeast of Mosul, showed the urgent and widespread need for psychosocial assistance among displaced families, with nearly three-quarters of those interviewed expressing a strong level of distress," Dujarric said.

Maybe that's what Ibrahim means by progress?

    Increased refugees?

We know what the Iraqi position on refugees is: Indifference and hatred.

It was left to the KRG for the last six years to take the bulk of the refugees.

The central government based in Baghdad didn't give a damn.

There's a lot of talk about fake news these days.  It's a shame that Twitter's about the only medium really offering context:

As we wind down, we'll include this press release from the office of Iraq War veteran and US House Rep Tulsi Gabbard:

Gabbard Statement on Meeting with President-Elect Donald Trump

    November 21, 2016

New York, NY—U.S. Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard (HI-02) today released the following statement on her meeting with President-elect Donald Trump regarding Syria:
"President-elect Trump asked me to meet with him about our current policies regarding Syria, our fight against terrorist groups like al-Qaeda and ISIS, as well as other foreign policy challenges we face. I felt it important to take the opportunity to meet with the President-elect now before the drumbeats of war that neocons have been beating drag us into an escalation of the war to overthrow the Syrian government—a war which has already cost hundreds of thousands of lives and forced millions of refugees to flee their homes in search of safety for themselves and their families.
“While the rules of political expediency would say I should have refused to meet with President-elect Trump, I never have and never will play politics with American and Syrian lives.
“Serving the people of Hawaiʻi and our nation is an honor and responsibility that I do not take lightly.  Representing the aloha spirit and diversity of the people of Hawaiʻi, I will continue to seek common ground to deliver results that best serve all Americans, as I have tried to do during my time in Congress.
“Where I disagree with President-elect Trump on issues, I will not hesitate to express that disagreement.  However, I believe we can disagree, even strongly, but still come together on issues that matter to the American people and affect their daily lives. We cannot allow continued divisiveness to destroy our country.
“President-elect Trump and I had a frank and positive conversation in which we discussed a variety of foreign policy issues in depth. I shared with him my grave concerns that escalating the war in Syria by implementing a so-called no fly/safe zone would be disastrous for the Syrian people, our country, and the world. It would lead to more death and suffering, exacerbate the refugee crisis, strengthen ISIS and al-Qaeda, and bring us into a direct conflict with Russia which could result in a nuclear war. We discussed my bill to end our country’s illegal war to overthrow the Syrian government, and the need to focus our precious resources on rebuilding our own country, and on defeating al-Qaeda, ISIS, and other terrorist groups who pose a threat to the American people.
“For years, the issue of ending interventionist, regime change warfare has been one of my top priorities. This was the major reason I ran for Congress—I saw firsthand the cost of war, and the lives lost due to the interventionist warmongering policies our country has pursued for far too long.
“Let me be clear, I will never allow partisanship to undermine our national security when the lives of countless people lay in the balance."
