That racist MAGA

Former President Donald Trump's fundraising emails are growing more unstable as the election draws closer, Chauncey DeVega wrote for Salon.
It's common for emails from both political parties to use overwrought and dramatic language — but, he wrote, there's something different about what Trump is doing — something darker and uglier.
Trump, "is using his propaganda emails to target and incite violence and hatred against non-white 'illegal immigrants,' refugees and other non-citizens," wrote DeVega.

For example, in one email that was sent to supporters last week, "Trump told his followers: 'Don’t let anyone view your screen.' The fundraising email is styled as some type of secret message, an 'eyes-only' communication akin to the ones sent to intelligence operatives or perhaps something lurid that could get them in trouble if others were to see it." And it said the message was for “verified citizens” — which sends a clear message set against his rants that immigrants are "poisoning the blood" of America.

Trump is also directing hatred against the LGBTQ community, with another recent email saying, "Are you male or female? MALE/FEMALE/INSANE."

Making the whole thing more unsettling, DeVega noted, is that Trump will swing between these hate-filled characterizations, and then insert declarations of love for the loyal. Another of his emails proclaimed, "I am Donald J. Trump. FEAR NOT! I will always love you for supporting me. Unity. Peace. Make America Great Again."

The juxtaposition and the wild swings between hatred of the other and love of the in-group, he wrote, serves to incite "stochastic terrorism."

He is a threat democracy.  He is a threat to the United States.  I have zero room in my life for idiots who are voting for him or, for that matter, for idiots who are voting for Jill Stein.  May they both spend time with Satan for the rest of eternity.

C.I., Ava and I did a piece for POLLY'S BREW this weekend.  We were talking about the lies about Kamala Harris and about the racism.  C.I. said, "And in one instance, the two really combined."  Which one? The lie that Kamala was drunk while delivering a speech.

If you missed that story, they did a TikTok or some such crap where they slowed her speech down to make her sound drunk.  It was outrageous.  But I didn't get how it was racist until C.I. brought it up.

As she put it, they're saying that the first Black person to ever be Vice President of the United States would go out in public and deliver a speech while drunk.

She was exactly right.  That was part of the racist attacks.  They wouldn't do it on a White man.  But they'd attack the Black woman.  And MAGA people are racist enough to buy it and to spread it.

In 2008, COMMON DREAMS pretended to be against racism.  Every critique or slam of Barack Obama would result in them writing three or four pieces attacking the racist.  But these days, COMMON DREAMS just looks the other way.  Apparently, the site changed its name to COMMON DREAMS OF AND FOR WHITE PEOPLE.

I have no use for them.

And I find it telling that all the White people wanted to pretend that we needed to talk about  intersectional theory, but now that it applies to Kamala Harris, we're all supposed to ignore the topic.

I am really proud of the column that Ava, C.I. and I wrote.   Now let me recommend Marin Scotten's piece for SALON:

Donald Trump on Monday claimed that immigrants are predisposed to becoming murderers because they have “bad genes," a racist claim belied by studies showing immigrants actually commit fewer crimes than native-born Americans.

“Many of them murdered far more than one person, and they’re now happily living in the United States,” the former president said in an interview on “The Hugh Hewitt Show.”

“You know, now a murderer, I believe this, it’s in their genes. And we got a lot of bad genes in our country right now. They left, they had 425,000 people come into our country that shouldn’t be here, that are criminals,” Trump continued.

The GOP nominee's comments on "The Hugh Hewitt Show" are just the latest in a string of lies from the Republican candidate attacking immigrants, the most outrageous of which is that Haitian immigrants in Ohio are eating pets.

Trump has had a long obsession with genes and bloodlines, often citing superior genetics as a reason for success long before he got into politics.

"Iraq snapshot" (THE COMMON ILLS):

Monday, October 7, 2024.  It's amazing the number of lies Donald Trump can pack into one weekend.

As questions continue to swirl about Convicted Felon Donald Trump's sanity, let's start with Lee Moran (HUFFINGTON POST):

Former president and current GOP nominee Donald Trump on Sunday melted down once again over late-night TV host Jimmy Kimmel.

Trump shared on his Truth Social platform footage of Kimmel in March, while hosting the 96th Academy Awards, reading on stage a hostile “review” that Trump wrote about his performance.

Kimmel actually ended his bit with the zinger, “Thank you, President Trump. Thank you for watching I’m surprised you’re still— isn’t it past your jail time?”

But Trump cut the line mocking him and his legal woes from the clip that he shared.

First off, I saw this and thought, "How did that old article end up on the front page of HUFFINGTON POST?"  It's not an old article.  This happened yesterday.

Yesterday, Donald was ranting and raving about a joke that Jimmy Kimmel made nearly seven months ago.  What?  He didn't catch what SNL's WEEKEND UPDATE said about him?

"It was reported that Donald Trump has refused to release his medical records and I bet I know what he's hiding but I'm not allowed dementia it."

Yes, he is losing his mind and that's why he's on social media on Sunday exploding over a joke told last March.  He's unhinged and not fit for office.  Sean Craig (DAILY BEAST) notes:

An increasingly incoherent and profane former president Donald Trump, 78, is blathering on at his rallies at previously unheard-of lengths and showing signs of confusion that could indicate mental decline, according to a New York Times analysis.

An average rally speech by the elderly Republican nominee for president—who has promised to release his medical records and cognitive tests and then refused to do so—lasts 82 minutes this election cycle, nearly double the 45 minutes he averaged in 2016, a computer analysis by the newspaper found.

In addition to Trump’s well documented rambling, repetitive and winding addresses—punctuated with strange asides about things like his “beautiful” body—among the potential signs of cognitive change are that he curses 69 percent more in speeches than he did in 2016. That could be a sign of disinhibition, a kind of impulsivity that is sometimes attributed to mental decline in old age, the Times said.

The newspaper also said its analysis found Trump used negative words 32 percent more negative words than positive ones, up considerably from 21 percent in 2016, another potential indicator of cognitive change.

He also uses he uses 13 percent more “all-or-nothing” terms such as “always” or “never” compared to 2016, another potential sign of advanced age.

Meanwhile, Trump’s seeming obsession with the past—his ramblings have been dotted with stale cultural references to Silence of the Lambs, Johnny Carson, Michael Jackson, Cary Grant, and Charles Lindburgh—have not only dated him, but earned a raised eyebrow from one expert in August.

When he's not raving like a lunatic, he offers lies.  A little earlier today, Mika and Joe offered a look at that on MSNBC's MORNING JOE.

"They can't run on the truth because they're losing on the truth," Joe observes.  The lies never end with Donald Trump.  Robin Abcarian (LOS ANGELES TIMES) notes:

Question: When did fact-checking become an outrageous abuse of debate moderators' power?

Answer: When MAGA Republicans decided they didn’t like anyone pointing out that they're lying.

In a perfect world, it might be enough for political opponents to correct each other’s prevarications and exaggerations. But Donald Trump’s entry into presidential politics, with his incessant flights of fancy and nonstop lying, have completely changed the dynamics. While other presidential candidates have stretched the truth, only one has kidnapped it, bound and gagged it, put it in a barrel and tossed it into the East River.

In the age of Trump, fact-checking has become a necessary service for moderators and other journalists to provide to voters.

Take the first and probably only presidential debate between Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, on Sept. 10.

Some Trumpers went bonkers after ABC News' David Muir corrected one of the former president’s most egregious and dangerous falsehoods — that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, were abducting pets and eating them. Muir noted that Springfield’s city manager said there were no credible claims of pets being “harmed, injured or abused by individuals within the immigrant community.”

“But the people on television say their dog was eaten by the people that went there,” Trump insisted in the course of a rant that launched a kajillion memes.

There is not a single television interview of any Springfield pet owner claiming their cat or dog was stolen and eaten by immigrants. There was a news story about a woman killing and appearing to eat a cat, but she was born in and lived in Canton, about 175 miles away from Springfield. (She was reportedly charged with "disorderly conduct by reason of intoxication," among other offenses.)

Facts are the enemy of MAGA.  Home schooled in questionable courses, they never really learned anything and they're proud of it -- watch them proudly and loudly proclaim at any pediatrician's office, "School note?  We don't need no school note!  I educates my kids all by mys self."  Yes, you do.  Thereby explaining how our country's population grows more uneducated with each year.

Fact checks are never the friend to MAGA nor to MAGA candidates.  Tom Boggioni (RAW STORY) notes:

A rant by GOP vice presidential candidateJ.D. Vance at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania was dismissed by CNN's Alayna Treene Sunday morning after he accused Democrats of being behind assassination attempts aimed at Donald Trump.

Vance made a speaking appearance with the former president at the site of the first attempt on Trump's life weeks ago.

[. . .]

"Now, Victor [Blackwell] and Amara [Walker], we know that both Trump and J.D. Vance have tried to argue in the past that perhaps Democrats, Democrats' rhetoric about Donald Trump, particularly arguing that he may be a threat to democracy may have been what had led to that first assassination attempt, or even the second assassination attempt on Donald Trump's life."

"Of course, there's no evidence to support that, but that was the case that they were making," she added.

Evidence, proof, facts, certified vote counts?  MAGA trusts none of these.  It's not taught in their home schools.   Mauricio Alencar (DAILY BEAST) observes:

CNN’s Dana Bash and Lara Trump sparred over misinformation Donald Trump has spread about funding for disaster relief in North Carolina, with the anchor refusing to let the former president’s daughter-in-law get away with ducking her questions.

Bash laid into the Republican National Committee co-chair as she tried to change the direction from her father-in-law's dubious claims that FEMA is only offering a few hundred dollars to Americans who have had their homes destroyed in Hurricane Helene.

“I wanna not let this get out there,” the host replied on Sunday's edition of State of the Union.

“You are right that FEMA is giving $750 [to each family],” Bash said. “But that is a first step for immediate needs. It’s called serious needs assistance.”

Bash’s correction got under Lara Trump’s skin.

Truth upsets MAGA -- causes their skin to blister -- like when sunlight hits a vampire's skin.  Joe DePaolo (MEDIATE) also notes Lara's attempts to get away with lying:

The CNN anchor then played comments from Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) — who lauded the federal response to the hurricane during a press conference on Friday in Asheville.

“I’m actually impressed with how much attention was paid to a region that wasn’t likely to have experienced the impact that they did,” Tillis said. He added, “For anybody who thinks that any level of government, anybody here could have been prepared precisely for what we’re dealing with here clearly are clueless… But right now, I’m out here to say that we’re doing a good job.”

“He and others are saying ‘please’ to the former president and to others stop spreading misinformation because it’s hurting people in North Carolina,” Bash said.

Lara Trump went on to downplay the comments from a senator from her own party who is on the ground in the affected area.

Jack Smith's filing this week laid out how Donald Trump planned and plotted the January 6th violence in order to stop the election results from being made official so that he could hang onto power even though he lost the election.  Perry Stein (WASHINGTON POST) recaps:

In response to the Supreme Court immunity decision, prosecutors filed a superseding indictment in August against Trump — which charged him with the same four crimes, but with whittled-down evidence. On Wednesday, the judge unsealed Smith’s much anticipated filing that explained why the evidence in the superseding indictment should be considered private acts that can be prosecuted, rather than official acts that are immune from prosecution.

  • The filing lays out more extensively than before how many people told Trump there was no proof the election was stolen as he waged a campaign to overturn Joe Biden’s victory. In one striking detail, Smith said Trump allegedly said “So what?” when an aide told him Vice President Mike Pence had been taken to a secure location as violence unfolded at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.
  • In another instance, Smith alleges that a White House staffer overheard Trump telling family members: “It doesn’t matter if you won or lost the election. You still have to fight like hell.”
  • And the new filing also highlights how some within Trump’s orbit tried to stifle those who said he lost the election. When Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani found out the chief counsel of the Republican National Committee sent an email urging colleagues not to back claims of a stolen election, Giuliani allegedly sent him a threatening voicemail.

USA TODAY quotes from the filing:

When the defendant lost the 2020 presidential election, he resorted to crimes to try to stay in office. With private co-conspirators, the defendant launched a series of increasingly desperate plans to overturn the legitimate election results in seven states that he had lost—Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin (the ‘targeted states’). His efforts included lying to state officials in order to induce them to ignore true vote counts; manufacturing fraudulent electoral votes in the targeted states; attempting to enlist Vice President Michael R. Pence, in his role as President of the Senate, to obstruct Congress’s certification of the election by using the defendant’s fraudulent electoral votes; and when all else had failed, on January 6, 2021, directing an angry crowd of supporters to the United States Capitol to obstruct the congressional certification.

The filing has very disturbing information and it also highlights some grand stupidity.  Charles P. Pierce (ESQUIRE) notes:

Let’s hear another big cheer for Rudy Giuliani, who managed to go from America’s toughest prosecutor to America’s Dumbest Conspirator. In December 2020, Giuliani was in Michigan, trying to get a fake-electors scheme under way there. According to Smith’s report, Giuliani texted to an unidentified someone:

So I need you to pass a joint resolution from the legislature that states the election is in dispute, there’s an ongoing investigation by the legislature, and the Electors sent by Governor Whitmer are not the official electors of the state of Michigan and do not fall within the Safe Harbor deadline under Michigan law.

Alas for crime, Giuliani entered the wrong number into his phone and so the text went into the ether, only to be plucked by Smith and his team.

Shawn Musgrave (THE INTERCEPT) attempts to identify some of the redacted names while Shirin Ali (SLATE) zooms in on some details:

In the months leading up to the 2020 election, Trump privately told his advisers, campaign staff, and former Vice President Mike Pence’s staff that he did not plan to accept the results; instead, “he would simply declare victory before all the ballots were counted and any winner was projected,” Smith wrote.

This was evident in Trump’s public comments at the time, as he began to plant seeds of doubt in the country’s voting process and refused to give a straight answer when asked if he would accept the election results. For instance, Trump publicly claimed universal mail-in voting was “inaccurate” and “fraudulent”—despite voting by mail in the primaries himself. During his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention, Trump proclaimed that “the only way they can take this election away from us is if this is a rigged election.”

Three days before the election, according to the special counsel’s motion, a “private political advisor” (the name is redacted) who had been working on Trump’s campaign told a gathering of Trump supporters that the former president was going to declare victory no matter what. “That doesn’t mean he’s the winner, he’s just going to say he’s the winner,” the adviser said. The adviser also explained that mail-in ballots would mostly favor Biden, and because they take longer to count, it would create an opening for Trump to dispute the election. “And so they’re going to have a natural disadvantage and Trump’s going to take advantage of it—that’s our strategy. He’s going to declare himself a winner.”

It was planned all along.  This was not happenstance, this was not someone who was actually a bystander to some horrible events.  Donald Trump actively plotted for violence to take place.  He intended it to take place. Democracy did not matter to Donald Trump.  The voters will did not matter to Donald Trump.  The republic did not matter to Donald Trump.  The safety of people did not matter to Donald Trump.  All that mattered to Donald was retaining the title of president -- a title the American people voted to strip him of.

At THE NATION, Chris Lehmann observes:

The chronology in the filing’s finding of fact makes it clear just how manic and deranged Trump was in seeking to cling to the presidency—to the point of deliberately dismissing the actual outcome of the election. During Trump’s months-long crusade to discredit the balloting, without a shred of evidence, one White House staffer overheard him telling his nepo-adjutants Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, “It doesn’t matter if you won or lost the election. You still have to fight like hell.”

That was the de facto motto of the whole unfounded assault on a free and fair election. As election officials in downtown Detroit continued to count ballots the day after the election, a group of GOP protesters, high on bogus “stop the steal” rhetoric, tried to break into the building and disrupt the count. An operative at the scene texted a Trump campaign official—whose identity is redacted in the filing, but who appears to be the campaign’s elections operations director, Mike Roman. That campaign official had initially parried an earlier text indicating that the counting was legitimate with the directive, “Find a reason it isn’t.” Now told that the confrontation could explode into another “Brooks Brothers riot”—the Roger Stone–orchestrated campaign op that stymied a critical recount effort in Florida after the 2000 election—the official replied, “Make them riot. Do it!!!”

That was the Trump team’s ethos on January 6 as well, as Smith’s filing makes painfully clear. As frantic White House officials sought to get Trump to issue a statement telling the January 6 rioters to stand down, Trump instead churlishly repaired to the White House dining room to watch TV and tweet. This was when he issued the fateful tweet excoriating his vice president, Mike Pence, for lacking the “courage” to throw out the election results and anoint Congress with nonexistent powers to overturn the ballots of 81 million Americans. In no time flat, Pence’s Secret Service detail was forced to evacuate him from the Capitol, since, per Smith’s filing, “the defendant personally posted the tweet…at a point when he already understood the Capitol had been breached.” When another White House aide informed Trump of Pence’s evacuation as rioters came within 40 feet of his location, Trump’s reply was “So what?”

Whatever else this is, it’s clearly not the conduct of a US president honoring his constitutional oath or carrying out the duties of his office. As Smith’s filing points out, the president has no designated role in overseeing or certifying election results—for the obvious reason that doing so represents a howling conflict of interest.

Dropping back to the March 6th snapshot:

When the legal cases against him began to get play, that clarified his role behind the scenes and, no, it's not stretch to see him as the ringleader.

But there were other issues there as well and the press, and the lawyers and the Congress elected to ignore them.

Let's drop back to January 20, 2017.

What a sad and poorly dressed family.  But the key take away is that Donald took the oath of office.  He was sworn in as president.

This is the oath they all have to take:

I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.
You saw the video, Donald took the oath.

Donald then broke the oath.

He took an oath to uphold the Constitution.  He broke that oath.  Article II is part of the Constitution:

  • Clause 2 Electors
  • Each State shall appoint, in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a Number of Electors, equal to the whole Number of Senators and Representatives to which the State may be entitled in the Congress: but no Senator or Representative, or Person holding an Office of Trust or Profit under the United States, shall be appointed an Elector.

  • Clause 3 Electoral College Count
  • The Electors shall meet in their respective States, and vote by Ballot for two Persons, of whom one at least shall not be an Inhabitant of the same State with themselves. And they shall make a List of all the Persons voted for, and of the Number of Votes for each; which List they shall sign and certify, and transmit sealed to the Seat of the Government of the United States, directed to the President of the Senate. The President of the Senate shall, in the Presence of the Senate and House of Representatives, open all the Certificates, and the Votes shall then be counted. The Person having the greatest Number of Votes shall be the President, if such Number be a Majority of the whole Number of Electors appointed; and if there be more than one who have such Majority, and have an equal Number of Votes, then the House of Representatives shall immediately chuse by Ballot one of them for President; and if no Person have a Majority, then from the five highest on the List the said House shall in like Manner chuse the President. But in chusing the President, the Votes shall be taken by States, the Representation from each State having one Vote; A quorum for this Purpose shall consist of a Member or Members from two thirds of the States, and a Majority of all the States shall be necessary to a Choice. In every Case, after the Choice of the President, the Person having the greatest Number of Votes of the Electors shall be the Vice President. But if there should remain two or more who have equal Votes, the Senate shall chuse from them by Ballot the Vice President.

  • Clause 4 Electoral Votes
  • The Congress may determine the Time of chusing the Electors, and the Day on which they shall give their Votes; which Day shall be the same throughout the United States.

Click on anything you need to in order to expand the above.  He broke it.  He came up with fake electors, he plotted and schemed.  Every thing he did to try to avoid leaving office was illegal and unconstitutional.  The Constitution outlines the process.  It did not permit him to do what he did.  What he did was actually treason.

That's a strong word and it's one I don't toss around lightly because it carries the penalty of death.  But his actions qualify as treason.  He put himself above the country and that's not allowed.  And that's what should have been hammered home.

Is he fit to serve?  Four years earlier when he was presumably more aware of his surroundings, he was ready to destroy democracy to hold onto a second term.  He broke his oath to the Constitution.  Clearly, he is not fit for office.

They didn't hit on it.  They didn't cover it that way.  Maybe they just don't care about what's termed the supreme law of the land?

Must be because the media ignored that aspect, the attorneys did, the Congress did.

It is your first duty in office, to take the oath of office.  And you fail at keeping that oath then you have no business running for office again.

Holly Brewer (THE NEW REPUBLIC) observes:

Some of the strongest evidence in the brief focuses on the connections between Trump’s efforts to dispute the election, despite the overwhelming evidence that he had lost, and his threats against Mike Pence, as Trump repeatedly tried to force his vice president not to play his official role and in effect block the transition of power to a new president. But Smith is careful in his characterizations, distinguishing between Trump’s role as president and his role as a candidate: The brief argues that none of Trump’s attempts to pressure Pence should be regarded as “official” acts within the role accorded the president in terms of elections; instead, these were Trump’s campaign decisions, as a private citizen.

The most shocking evidence, as many news outlets highlighted on Wednesday, came in the connections between a series of Trump’s tweets, which Smith carefully shows are “private” acts, and Trump’s orchestration of a pressure campaign against Pence to not count the votes. Trump threatened Pence that he would be hated by hundreds of thousands of people, and then issued a tweet calling them to the U.S Capitol to protest. Finally, on January 6, when Pence had not yielded to such pressure, Trump tweeted a message at 2:24 p.m. that essentially sicced the crowd on him—and then, when warned by an aide of the danger Pence was in, responded,

Finally, in very important news, Alex Seitz-Wald (NBC NEWS) reports:

A group of imams endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris in an open letter shared first with NBC News on Sunday, a critical boost as she steps up her efforts to win back disaffected Muslim voters amid the Israel-Hamas war.

[. . .]

The 25 Islamic religious leaders who signed the letter, which comes a year after the Oct. 7 terrorist attack that sparked the war, argue that Muslim voters have a duty to think logically about their voting decisions and that backing Harris “far outweighs the harms of the other options."

“She is a committed ceasefire candidate too and is the best option for ending the bloodshed in Gaza and now Lebanon,” they wrote.

The imams argued that former President Donald Trump is a threat to their community.

“Knowingly enabling someone like Donald Trump to return to office, whether by voting directly for him or for a third-party candidate, is both a moral and a strategic failure. Particularly in swing states, a vote for a third party could enable Trump to win that state and therefore the elections,” they wrote.

“Given [Trump’s] well-documented history of harming our communities and country, as well as what he has promised he will do to Muslims and Palestinians should he return, it is incumbent upon us not to allow our high emotions to dictate our actions to our detriment,” the letter reads.

I'd hoped and planned for us to cover the White racist that is Elon Musk's mother but we'll do that later this week, hopefully, tomorrow.  There were other things as well that we'll have to wait on because there was so much recap from this weekend.

The following sites updated:

Stop the dog whistles

Thank you to Mike for covering a Supreme Court development in Thursday's "Donald Treason Trump, the Supreme Court and the great Colin Allred."   And thank you to Sasha Abramsky at THE NATION for covering the very real racism that Trump is using to appeal to voters and the threats this puts out on so many of us in this country:

There’s been a lot of talk recently about “understanding” the Trump voter, about not tarring them all with their leader’s fetid brush. Good luck on that front. For, based on that particular interaction between cult leader and cult followers in Pennsylvania, I’d say a significant portion of them, at least the ones who think it a worthy investment of time and energy to attend a Trump rally, are now reveling in out-and-out fascist calls to violence. They’re supporting Trump not despite his propensity to devolve into ugly calls for clearly illegal acts of violence but because of it. And, in these rallies, they are provided the cover of numbers to give their worst, most vicious impulses free rein. That’s the emotional timbre of the lynch mob.

Let’s be clear here: No politician I have ever interviewed is a friend of shoplifters, gangsters (I haven’t interviewed Trump, so I add an asterisk here), burglars, drug dealers. No DA wakes up in the morning thinking of ways to make it easier for criminals to steal from their local Target superstore. But there are better ways to tackle street crime than giving uniformed officers carte blanche to beat the shit out of suspects. There are more effective law enforcement tools than the third degree.

Of course, in reality Trump’s proposals—and the reactions of his fans—have absolutely nothing to do with crime fighting and everything to do with intimidation and hierarchy, with using brute force to make it clear who’s boss.

In office, the MAGA leader sought to invoke the Insurrection Act against racial justice protesters; and he described police violence as a “beautiful thing to watch.” And while his 2016–20 presidency did see some criminal justice reform legislation signed into law, since then Trump has leaned into tough-on-crime policies: he has pledged to dramatically expand the use of the death penalty, to introduce summary executions for drug dealers, and Project 2025, which his campaign is closely tied to, has promised to pull back on federal probes into police violence against suspects. He has also repeatedly stated that he will use the Department of Justice to prosecute his political opponents, elections workers, and even members of the media.

Trump’s base loves all of this not because it’s about crime fighting but because it’s about retribution—against individuals and against groups deemed to be beyond the MAGA pale.

The only thing to understand about a Trump supporter is that they are a racist who feels aggrieved -- that especially includes Black MAGA.

"Iraq snapshot" (THE COMMON ILLS):

Friday, October 4, 2024.  We look at the importance of the coalition behind Kamala and we note the growing criticism of 'independent' media's failure to serve and recognize Black people.

Starting with Lawrence O'Donnell last night on MSNBC.

Liz Cheney campaigned with Kamala Harris in Wisconsin yesterday.

"Thank you, Liz!" chants greeted her.  Like Adam Kinzinger, Liz is one of many Republicans endorsing Kamala.

I love Jon Stewart and have known him for years.  He is very funny and that's his first obligation -- I understand that.  There are two times where we did not note him here this election cycle.  I didn't want to take part in the national stupidity of 'why violence, why!'  You preach violence, you sew it, karma comes after you.  Live by the sword, die by the sword, I didn't invent the phrase.

So we skipped that.  The other we skipped was the Dick Cheney insult.  I am not a Cheney fan -- to put it mildly.  We are on completely oposite sides and always will be and I will never forgive him for his actions regarding our attack on Iraq.

Jon was going for the joke and I get that and have no ill will towards him.

But I do not attack anyone from the opposite side of the aisle for endorsing Kamala Harris for president.  I have many policy reasons for endorsing Kamala.  I also think she has the skill, training and wisdom to be president -- I'm basing that on having known Kamala for many years.  And for any late to the party, Kamala and I are not friends.  She was in a relationship with a friend of mine and I just didn't like her (probably feeling protective -- and maybe even territorial -- with regards to my friend).  But when we started calling for Joe Biden to step aside, I was dictating the snapshot and going over some of the possibilities.  I wouldn't have thought she would be a valid possibility.  It's while dictating the snapshot -- and you can read it -- that I really thought about what her strengths are and what they are not and realize that not only is she a worthy possibility but she's actually the best possibility.

So I endorse her for her policies and also for her strong traits that argue she could be a great president -- she's immensely qualified from a resume perspective but I've also seen her under pressure and she has the skill set required and the temperament needed for the office.

But before there was Kamala's run, in 2023, I said here that I was voting for the Democrat whoever it ended up being.  I said that all of 2023 and I said that in 2024 -- long after everyone announced it was Joe and that that-was-that.  No, it wasn't.

Our country's future is at stake which is why I would vote for any Democrat to do my part to ensure that Donald Trump wasn't given the chance to destroy the country.  We were talking about, for example, Project 2025 here back in 2023.

Donald is a threat to our democracy.

And I see that.  A lot of people see that.

Adam and I would not agree on everything, Liz and I would not agree on everything.  Dick Cheney and I agree on pretty much nothing.  One thing I do applaud him for is taking this stand because it's right for the country but also because it's right for a parent.

We have seen Donald's threats to attack Liz Cheney.  Dick doesn't have to say anything.  He could be silent.  Bully Boy Bush is being silent (though he hates Donald Trump and even he thinks Donald is a threat to democracy).  So Dick could have been silent.

But that's his daughter that's being attacked and threatened by Donald.  And Dick has spoken out and I am glad he's on the side of democracy but I'm also happy to see that he would defend his daughter because I'm aware of just how many Republican politicians fear Donald getting back in the White House and yet they stay silent for various reasons.

So I'm not going to make fun of Dick Cheney for doing the right thing.

That is what so many Americans around the country are trying to do.

We are trying to save our republic.

We are trying to defend our democracy.

We are trying to save our nation.

And that is why you are seeing people coming together who may have nothing in common other than wanting to defend and save the United States.

In this election cycle, that's enough.  That's more than enough.

And I'm thankful for everyone willing to stand together and defend our country.

That's Liz Cheney speaking in Wisconsin and a speech worth hearing but what should especially resonate is Donald's efforts to force Mike Pence to help him overturn the legal election.

I'm not a Mike Pence fan.  We mainly just noted him here when he visited Iraq in 2019. I wasn't impressed.  But for the post-2020 election, I have to wonder why he hasn't received some official honor from the US government?

He certainly deserves it.

I did not rush to judgment on the January 6th incident.  Legal terms should be applied carefully and not in the heat of the moment is how I feel.  As one piece of evidence after another has emerged, this was an attempted coup that Donald plotted.  It was supposed to be violence.  Violence was supposed to create hysteria and stop the proceedings.  He spent weeks working on gathering a mob and then he incited the mob on January 6th.  He was willing to destroy our country to get four more years in office.  That's a disgusting motive and it's undeniable that is what he was doing.

The days after January 6th, I noted here reaptedly -- because I go cold when people try to inflame -- that the story here was that the system worked.

And it did work.

I was right about that.

But I wasn't right on why it worked.

It worked, as the facts now clearly attest, because Mike Pence believed in democracy and loved his country.   Again, he deserves our nation's highest honor and I don't know why he hasn't received it.  I hope he will under a Kamala Harris presidency.  If, heaven forbid, Donald wins this election, I hope one of President Joe Biden's last actions will be to award Mike Pence with some honor recognizing the patriotism that Pence demonstrated.

I am very thankful for Mike Pence.  And I am very thankful for all the people coming together around the effort to save this country by voting for Kamala.

In this week's vice presidential debate, JD Vance refused to answer questions about the insurrection and insisted he was "focused on the future."

As though an attempted coup less than four years ago is ancient history?

This goes to MAGA's hatred for books and knowledge.  The Trump cult can't stand books or knowledge or teaching.  They are the people who, like JD Vance, complain and whine about fact checking.  Reality is what MAGA wants to help Donald destroy.

And that's why this is Donald's war on America.

This country has struggled and struggled from the beginning.  Our history is not perfect or without blame.  And that's why we learn from the past and that's why we strive for better.

And that's why people who believe in this country can come together with Kamala to try to save this country.

I don't usually question other people's love for this country.

It's clear Donald doesn't love the country -- or anything or anyone but himself.

But did you pay attention to our so-called left media?  I'm not talking about corporate media which is slimed as "left media" by some -- I wish it were left media.  I'm talking about DEMOCRACY NOW!, COMMON DREAMS, IN THESE TIMES, et al.

Yesterday wasn't about Jack Straw's legal filing for them.

I don't know how you ignore that except you just don't care about this country.

A former federal prosecutor said Thursday night that the special counsel in former President Donald Trump's election subversion case may have a key response to the MAGA leader's latest attempt to have some of the charges against him dismissed.

Trump is now trying to get obstruction charges tossed from his federal election conspiracy case, arguing that the Supreme Court's recent decision in Fischer v. United States, which erased obstruction charges for January 6 rioters, also applies to him.

But that's not a done deal, former federal prosecutor Elie Honig explained to CNN's Kaitlan Collins on Thursday evening, because special counsel Jack Smith, who recently made an enormous filing detailing explosive evidence against Trump in the case, has one key way he can make a distinction between Trump and the rioters at issue in the Supreme Court's decision.

So RAW STORY is covering the issue.

We hear criticism that Donald's insane mutterings are getting "sane washed" by reporters who try to justify the remarks or down play them or try to instead report what they think he was trying to say.  And that's wrong.

But it's also wrong that DEMOCRACY NOW!, COMMON DREAMS, IN THESE TIMES and so many others are ignoring what's at stake.

They don't like Kamala, these outlets.  They're too busy grudge f**king America to argue on its behalf.

Many of them are telling and hoping Americans will waste their vote on Jill Stein.  She's not going to win and you're throwing your vote away because you're supporting MAGA and Trump because that's who has provided the legal support and the financial support to Jill Stein.

Your inflamed over Gaza to the point that you can't see reality.  Trump's not going to help Palestinians.  He would make things much, much worse.

Not only are they voting to harm Palestinians, they're also harming support for Palestinians -- support in the US.  They don't know what they're doing.  And when those of us who were covering it regularly (here, it was daily) stepped back because the Jill Stein crazies lied to America that it was supporting Gaza or supporting Kamala Harris, we saw how interest in the issue caved.

Because they don't know how to sell the issue, they don't know to structure the narrative.

The killing in Gaza has not stopped.  But most Americans are not as tied to the issue as they were.  It's become a I HATE AMERICA movement with the crazies in charge.  And hate is never going to rally good people.  It can frighten and trick stupid people -- and often does.

So they offer their hate.  And they join with other haters like Glenn Greenwald who can't shut up about, for example, Dick Cheney.  And people do realize that Glenn helped sell the Iraq War, right?  He was for it.  And yet today, he's the virgin protecting his maidenhead from Dick.  Ed Snowden's also attacking Kamala Harris.  From Russia.  As is Tara Reade.  From Russia.  Seems the more you hate America, the more you flirt with Donald Trump.

I don't know what COMMON DREAMS, DEMOCRACY NOW! and others think there future is.  I know that one of the biggest things we're discussing right now -- those of us who have funded independent media -- is their behavior currently.  And we're not planning on funding this garbage again.

We're a month away from a US election and DEMOCRACY NOW ignored Jack Smith's filings to give us a film ALJAZEERA made and broadcast about another country.

In a Donald Trump administration, other nations will not be pressured regarding human rights abuses or anything else.

I rightly criticized DEMOCRACY NOW! in 2009 for doing an inauguration party for Barack Obama and I had spent 2008 noting how the program tilted the scales and flat out lied -- Melissa Lie Face Harris you are not forgotten nor do I ever forget that Amy Goodman knew she was campaigning for Barack -- knew it by appearing on Rev Jesse Jackson's program with Lie Face -- and then brought her on DEMOCRACY NOW! and lied to the audience by presenting Lie Face as a disinterested college professor.

That I called out.

That's not journalism and it's nothing to be proud of.

They should be ashamed to this day.

And I am not calling for them to provide that kind of treatment to Kamala Harris campaign.  (Although it is worth noting that they and other outlets celebrated Barack Obama as a Black candidate -- remember David Lindorf's infamous quote? -- while today refusing to celebrate Kamala as the same.)  All I'm asking is that they cover the news, actually cover the news.  And Jack Straw's filing is news. And Myrlie Evers-Williams endorsing Kamala Harris was news.  But DEMOCRACY NOW! couldn't even note that in a headline -- despite having had this Civil Rights pioneer, the widow of Medgar Everts on their program before.

You're not doing journalism.

So-called 'independent' media -- that begs constantly for money -- either whores for their favored candidate or they ignore the one that they don't care about.

There's no balance, there's nothing between the two extremes.  And this is not journalism and should not be mistaken for it.

As Stacey Abrams notes in the video above, "There could not be a starker choice."

Stacey Abrams . . . who's been a guest multiple times on DEMOCRACY NOW! in the past.  But endorsing Kamala means she's vanished.

I've talked about why I support the coalition building around Kamala.  Maybe Amy doesn't?  Could be.  But how is this coalition not worthy of a debate or segment on DEMOCRACY NOW!?

We know who Donald Trump is.  We know the damage he has done.  We know the damage he wants to do.  I don't see the point in ever giving another dime to DEMOCRACY NOW! or any of the other outlets that are working to get Donald back in the White House.

What I'm hearing as I speak with one group after another every day this week is that 'independent' media doesn't care about Black people.  They complain about the way DN! and others refuse to celebrate Kamala Harris' run as historic, they complain about how their views and their opinions are not being embraced.   I'm going to note Betty's post from last night:

At the end of C.I.'s snapshot -- which I'll repost in full at the end -- she notes Will Bunch's column about Trump's desired "purge."  I want to note that here to give him credit for writing about it because very few White people have.  C.I. and I have covered it -- see my "" -- and C.I. not just written of it but also posted a huge number of video reports about it and you should have noticed that the people addressing this very serious topic in videos were overwhelmingly Black.  As both C.I. and I have noted, that's the community that would be hardest targeted in Trump's purge.  So thank you to Will Bunch -- who is White -- for writing about it.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump recently claimed that "one real tough, nasty" and "violent" day of police brutality would bring an immediate end to crime in the nation, raising alarms for experts on authoritarianism about the danger to democracy should Trump's remarks ever translate into policy.

[. . .]

Geoff Eley, a University of Michigan professor of contemporary history who studies nationalism and the far-right, told Salon that Americans should take Trump's comments seriously even if it's often hard to know his true intent.

"We need to take his comments very, very seriously, partly because this time he's bull-in-a-china-shop determined to get his way, partly because (by contrast with 2016) he's surrounded by a core of smart and ruthlessly committed helpers and ideologues, whose ideas are most definitely coherent, thought-through and focused," Eley said in an email.

Trump's "political accomplishment," Eley said, has been in imparting to large swaths of the country that "democracy, proceduralism, civility, speaking across differences, and the rule of law have outlived their purposes — they're fictions, illusions, tricks, and they no longer matter."

Despite Trump's insistence both at the rally and throughout his campaign that crime "has gone through the roof," data indicates that the opposite is true.

Recently released FBI stats show a 2.4% decrease in property crime between 2022 and 2023. Preliminary data comparing periods of 2024 ranging from the first quarter to the first half to the same periods of 2023 also indicated a drop in violent crime following the COVID-19 isolation-era uptick, suggesting this year will see a continued decline in the nation's crime rate.

I am sick of the failing White politician trying to scapegoat to win an election.  Donald Trump's entire campaign is a Willie Horton ad.  For those new to the Willie Horton aspect of a campaign, from WIKIPEDIA:

During the 1988 presidential election, US Vice President and Republican nominee George H. W. Bush brought Horton up frequently during his campaign against Democratic nominee Michael Dukakis who was the governor of Massachusetts. He was commonly referred to as "Willie" Horton, despite never having gone by the nickname. The renaming of the African-American Horton has been speculated to be the product of racist stereotyping.[2] A prominent PAC ad for Bush about Horton has been widely characterized as a textbook example of dog-whistle politics.[3][4][5][6][7]

In other words, when you can't win on your own, demonize Black people.

And thank you to Tatyana but, again, she's Black.  It would be nice to see more people like Will Bunch -- more non-Blacks -- grabbing this very serious story.  Instead, it comes off like yet again Black people are on their own.  We're expected to speak on behalf of all groups but when we're targeted White left goes silent too many times.  But thank you to Tatyana and to every Black person who has rightly raised their voices to call Trump's deranged proposal out.

Black people are already the most targeted with police violence.  Trump is threatening us and he's threatening us because it feeds his racist base.  It plays to their hatred and racism and resentment.  He's painting a target on our backs.

If you're not getting how empty and desperate Trump and his MAGA are, ATLANTA BLACK STAR NEWS reports:

A white Republican running for Congress in Nevada was caught on tape Monday telling supporters, “I’m from North Las Vegas. I’m not worried about Black people.”
John Lee is seeking to represent Nevada’s 4th Congressional District, where 15 percent of the population is Black. His opponent, incumbent Democrat Steven Horsford, was recently named chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, a promotion that drew ridicule from Lee, formerly mayor of North Las Vegas.

“They made him chair of the Black Caucus. Whoop-de-doo,” Lee said on an audiotape obtained by HuffPost.

Lee went on to denigrate the CBC, following a pattern of insults over the last year. In August, he said they were comparable to a “blond-haired caucus,” and he had previously called the group “stupid.”

[. . .]

Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee spokesperson Lauryn Fanguen condemned Lee’s remarks in a statement.

“John Lee’s shocking comments about Black Nevadans and CBC Chair Steven Horsford are not only deeply offensive but betray an utter disdain for a large swath of the district he claims to want to represent,” Fanguen said.

Ava and I have spent a lot of time in Georgia with Betty (Betty is exclusively speaking Georgia -- her home state -- and has taken time off from her job to do so).

Donald Trump is using Black people, threats against them, insults and targeting them for violence.  And that's disgusting.  But where's our 'independent' media in this?  They aren't rushing to defend.

We were speaking -- Betty, Ava and I -- near Johns Creek yesterday to a group and a Black woman from Johns Creek stated she felt as though the left media -- she named COMMON DREAMS -- was playing the oppression olympics and giving all this credence to issues outside this country while ignoring the very threats to Black people in our country.

Betty is correct in her post that Donald's doing dog whistles and Willie Horton-ing Black people.  He's playing to and promoting racism.  And apparently White-White-White 'independent' media can't grasp that -- can't grasp what Black people are seeing and feeling.
