Mainly, though, we were struck by how tribal Traister is—how lacking in generosity, how politically foolish. Within this particular tribe, the nation’s powerful advances in gay rights—the fact that the nation now has a black president—can’t in any way reflect evolving instincts or advancing views by anyone in the center or on the right. All Traister is able to see “on the right” is “this kind of rage and multi-faceted rage”—“the violent anti-immigration stuff, the violent homophobia, the racism and the anti-Americanism.” It’s tremendously threatening and dangerous.
Truth to tell, there really isn’t a lot of “violent anti-immigration stuff” or “violent homophobia” going on in the wider society. But when “progressives” like Traister sit to stroke one another and chat, these demonic forces are said to be widespread. Weirdest of all, Traister is such a reflexive tribalist that she even describes the rise in “the number of people in this country who do not speak English” as some sort of progressive triumph. Nothing is necessarily “wrong” with a growing number of non-English speakers, if we do have such a phenomenon in the US. But it’s hard to know why someone would describe this as a progressive triumph, and you really have to be a fool to present this as Traister did—as a triumph for the left, opposed by those on the right because of their violent anti-immigration” instincts and their “dangerous,” “threatening” instincts.
Can we share a secret? In some ways, the rise in low-income immigration presents large costs to the society—to its public schools, for example. You don’t have to be a racist to know that, or to find it troubling, annoying or undesirable—except when high-minded people like Traister sit to stroke and chat. Sometimes, The Crazy isn’t crazy at all, even though it may not reflect your own reaction. But tribalists have never seen the world this way, and they never will.
I like it when people take on the crazy. Ava and C.I. wrote about Sunday in "TV: Crazy Thursday." And I had an e-mail that reminded me something of these crazy times, I saw what I didn't want to be.
A reader wrote that she is grateful she voted for Nader in 2008 and that she never drank the Kool-Aid because she could have been "one of them."
And I know just what she means, one of the people who excuse or ignore everything wrong Barack does, who plays one-sided and acts like things are only wrong when the other tribe does it.
And she's right. That's something to have gone through and to have emerged from.
And it's kept me from being a whore like Stewart J. Lawrence is.
Question, Toilet Stew, why do you always attack women? And why are you so damn stupid and so damn sexist? At CountyPunch, he writes:
In theory, of course, Whitman shouldn't be exempt from salty, and even demeaning descriptions that are frequently heaped upon male politicians, including the "W-word." In an era when male and female political candidates on both sides of the aisle freely sell their souls - and their votes - to corporate lobbyists, no one has a monopoly on political street-walking.
Except that Whitman's a woman, and in our double-standard sex culture, apparently that changes everything, given our lingering attachment to the dead-and-dying concept of "male chilvalry." Call a woman a whore - if you're a man, at least - and you're guilty of insulting her dignity, not just her politics, even if the remark - if Brown uttered it at all, and it doesn't appear
that he did - was mere short-hand for how his campaign might portray Whitman's decision to crassly pander to public safety unions - not an actual smear on her character.
Hey, Jackson, why don't you shut up. What is it about some White men on the left that encourages them to make asses out of themselves.
"Male chilvalry"? What world did you live in jack ass? Hillary was called a bitch on CNN and where was the objection from the left? Where was an 'action alert' from FAIR?
They didn't do a damn thing.
They never do.
And then we had to endure all the attacks on Sarah Palin -- including the t-shirt calling her the c-word.
Stewart is just a sexist pig. He can't be reached.
I hope he dies soon or retires one because he's not helping anyone and people like him are the greatest obstacle to equality.
And what is it about some White women?
Did you miss it, Clarence Thomas' wife is bothering Anita Hill. The White woman is trying to demand an apology from Anita because Anita told the truth.
Talk about "the crazy" . . .
That's it for me tonight.
