Aloha from Honolulu, Hawaii, now the seventh state in the nation to recognize civil unions for same-sex couples. Recently, our new Gov. Neil Abercrombie signed the civil unions bill into law, stating “E komo mai: it means all are welcome. This signing today of this measure says to all of the world that they are welcome. That everyone is a brother or sister here in paradise.”First, applause for Hawaii.
That said, so?
I'm sorry but civil unions are not the same as marriage equality.
Every adult should be able to marry any other adult if they both want marriage.
There shouldn't be an opposite-sex marriage and a same-sex civil union.
Real equality, full equality.
Now if this were 1993 or even 1999, I might be jumping up and down cheering.
And I'm sorry not to be more energetic about this. But it's 2011 and we all know, don't we?, that civil unions are not the same as marriage.
I am for marriage-equality.
I will applaud what Hawaii's done the same way I'll applaud when a needed traffic light goes up; however, I won't pretend we've reached equality via civil unions.
