I love Betinna. She's very real to me. I didn't want to kill her off. At the same time, I couldn't stomach all the sexist attacks on Hillary Clinton. So I just chucked the ending we were headed towards and flipped the site over to a blog. (Betinna was drugged and taught to recite "Thomas Friedman is a Great Man." Clearly he was not and is not. But that's where the title of this site comes from.)
Due to recent e-mails from people who were discovering those early days and people who were remembering them and my own nostalgia, I decided to flip it back.
Betinna was pushed off a building at the start of this week. What's happening now? We're going slowly as is she. Obviously, she's not dead. Other than that, you'll have to stay tuned.
But I am breaking away to note my outrage over Nir Rosen's attack on Lara Logan.
Lara Logan is a CBS reporter. She's reported from Iraq and Afghanistan.
She's also been repeatedly attacked for her looks by many men.
She was reporting on Egypt from Egypt.
She was attacked and sexually assaulted.
When CBS released a statement on that this week, Nir Rosen began attacking her and making disgusting remarks. He argued she deserved to be sexually assaulted because he disagreed with her reporting. He argued that it would be funny if Anderson Cooper had been sexually assaulted as well.
Sexual assault is not a joke. No one deserves to be sexually assaulted. But certainly, if you sexually assault someone, you would think people 'deserve' it.
Nir Rosen is disgusting.
In the snapshot (below), C.I. notes Laura Flanders is the only one on the left at a left magazine who has called his comments out. I used to have a lot of respect for Laura Flanders. More like her commentary on sexual assault would restore that respect.
I think it's very sad that so many on my side (the left) refuse to call out what Nir Rosen has done and said.
The reality is that sexism on the left came out in public in 2008 and has thrived ever since.
We need to call it out, we need to police our own. If we don't, we should just accept that we really aren't left and we really don't care about equality.
If the left wants to give up that position, I would assume they'd lose a great many people (including myself).
