And I want to note the Nick Ashford coverage in the community (including my own):
- Kat's Korner (of The Common Ills)
- Continuous errors from the press8 hours ago
- Thomas Friedman is a Great Man
- Nick Ashford has passed away8 hours ago
Plus Rebecca's "the boss" and C.I.'s "Iraq snapshot" (yes, I did swipe the links above from C.I.'s morning entry).
There were other posts online and I praise all the people who took the time to write about Nick at their own blogs (all, not just in this community) because Nick's death was being treated as 'runner up' and the push back we were all a part of meant that the press had to take the death seriously or faces charges of racism.
Accurate charges if you read what the press produced because we're talking about some of the most uninformed idiots.
But to be sure Nick got his due is why C.I. included it in the snapshot. She knew him (she knows Valerie) and she wasn't going to let him or him and Valerie be disrespected.
And because of all of our pushback what was '2 songwriters die' (Jerry Lieber being the other) stories that then ignored Nick (except to note "Solid" which they wrongly and repeatedly called "Solid As A Rock") to recite their hoary old tales of Lieber & Stoller out of the rock canon. Repeating stale tidbits and ignoring Nick and what he and Valerie accomplished.
Ava told me on the phone today that C.I. spent a good chunk of time yesterday arguing with various people about their coverage, for example a magazine that thought a paragraph was enough or a newspaper that felt they could just re-run an AP article and pretend that covered the passing.
I think of all the work it required by so many for a creative force like Nick Ashford to get the proper recognition he deserved demonstrates how there are multiple Americas in this country. I can and do know the songs of most White singers. But, even now, so many who live in White America don't know very much at all about soul music.
